Module APD

DASY8 Module APD (10 – 45 GHz)

DASY8 Module APD is the first system worldwide for demonstration of compliance with absorbed power density (APD) limits at frequencies from 10 – 45 GHz in full accordance with all national and international standards and regulations.

System

DASY8 Module APD is composed of a pseudo-vector APD probe (EUAPDVx) mounted to the precision robot TX2, which allows the fields inside frequency-specific APD phantoms – filled with liquids that simulate reflection/transmission of the human skin – to be scanned. The probes are miniaturized, sensitive, highly linear, and calibrated. The relative spatial precision used to position the probe inside the phantom is better than 0.1 mm. The scanning is optimized and is adaptive to the induced field. The peak spatial APD is determined by reconstruction. The advanced software allows for the evaluation of any transmitter, including multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) devices.

An advanced application programming interface (API) allows for the development of customized testing strategies.

Applications Evaluation of the compliance of any wireless device with APD safety guidelines and regulatory requirements at frequencies of 10 – 45 GHz.
Basic Components
Probes

EUAPDVx – Designed for precise near-field measurements in the mm-wave range. The specifications are:

  • Frequency range: 10 – 45 GHz
  • Dynamic range: <8 – >2000 V/m
  • Linearity: <±0.2 dB
  • Supports sensor model calibration (SMC)
  • Manufacturer calibration (ISO 17025-accreditation available soon)
Phantoms

The APD phantoms, together with the skin-simulating liquids, reliably emulate the absorption and reflection characteristics of human skin.

DASY8 Module APD supports the following APD phantoms:

Additional phantoms are being developed and will be released in 4Q2024 to cover the full 10 – 45 GHz frequency range.

Skin Simulating Liquids

DASY8 Module APD supports the following skin-simulating liquids (SSL):

  • SSL-30G skin-simulating liquid (24 – 30 GHz)

Additional skin-simulated liquids are being developed and will be released in 4Q2024 to cover the full 10 GHz – 45 GHz frequency range.

Dielectric properties of the skin-simulating liquids can be measured with a DAK 1.2E.

Mounting Devices

MD4APDVx - Ensures accurate positioning of smartphones under the APD phantom.

MDP4APDVx - Mounting device platform to easily position the MD4APDVx under the APD phantom.

System Check / Verification

DASY8 Module APD is compatible with the Verification Source 30 GHz.

Additional verification sources are being developed and will be released in 4Q2024 to cover the full 10 – 45 GHz frequency range.

Software

DASY8 Module APD offers the following features:

  • Novel algorithms for reconstruction of amplitude and phase of the E- and H-fields and the real part of the power density (S) from measurements of the E-field polarization ellipses
  • Evaluation and visualization of field magnitude, vector field, and surface averaged APD values with standard (1 cm2 / 4 cm2 ) and user-defined averaging areas.
  • Optimized workflow with minimal user interaction and automated report generation
  • Fast Area Scans to provide the E-field distribution over the entire surface of the device-under-test (DUT) within a few minutes only
  • Time Averaged Scan for evaluation of devices that monitor the output power over time.
API (licensed)

The API Option enables further automation of APD compliance measurement workflows via HTTP commands.

Typical use cases are:

  • Automation of test reduction procedures (i.e., decision whether the next measurement will be performed dynamically)
  • Integration of third-party tools such as BSS, test software, DUT positioner, etc.

The API is compatible with any programming language supporting HTTP requests. It is available as a licensed option.

Calibration DASY8 Module APD supports the Sensor Model Calibration (SMC) and standard linearization for pulsed signals.
Standard Compatibility

DASY8 Module APD enables measurement of the absorbed power density (ICNIRP2020) and epithelial power density (IEEE C95.1-2019).

It is fully compatible with the GB 21288-2022. the latest draft of the IEC/IEEE TR APD and other upcoming national regulations.

MaMIMO

Reliable and Repeatable

The only solution that accounts for backscattering, standing waves between transmitter and body, and absorption of reactive near-field components

The method is optimized to assess devices featuring transmitters with massive multiple-input multiple-output (MaMIMO) elements

As the method directly measures the APD, it is more reliable and provides better repeatability than any other method.

Product History

The measurement technology and method were developed in collaboration with the IT'IS Foundation, ETHZ and were co-financed by INNOSUISSE (Project no.: 45998.1), the SEAWave Project, and the EURAMET MEWS Project 21NRM03.
