OVERVIEW

What are our 5G solutions?

The wireless industry is working hard to meet the ambitious roll-out plans of mobile service providers for 5G services. WiGig is already available, and the first 5G network will be tested during the Winter Olympics 2018 in South Korea. In parallel, regulators and standards bodies are developing suitable and scientifically sound methods and instrumentation for demonstrating compliance with safety limits of handheld and body-mounted devices operating at frequencies >6 GHz. The safety limits for 5G exposure should be based on the specific absorption rate (SAR) for frequencies below 10 GHz and on surface-averaged power density above 10 GHz.

SPEAG’s cutting-edge millimeter EUmmWV2 probe works seamlessly with the DASY6 platform and 5G software module to measure electromagnetic exposures (electric magnetic and power density) up to 110 GHz as close as 2 mm from any device under test.

SPEAG – once more at the forefront of development and innovation – already offers a comprehensive portfolio of solutions to support the design and compliance testing of transmitters developed for emerging 5G technologies. The SPEAG 5G Solution includes SEMCAD X for transmitter design and determination of worst-case exposure configurations, as well as DASY6 or ICEy, with the novel EUmmWV2/SW Module 5G for demonstration of compliance with exposure limits for distances as small as 2 mm from any transmitter.

Applications

Design and power density compliance testing of transmitters at frequencies up to 110 GHz.

Transmitter Design and Verification

SEMCAD X features a unique toolbox for optimization and assessment of the performance of 5G devices, such as:

  • new modeling tools for creating computer-aided design (CAD) models of complete phased arrays with a few mouse clicks, with innovative background logic for setting up finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations of phased arrays via simple drag-and-drop operations
  • predefined phase/amplitude excitation patterns to simulate arrays operating under various conditions
  • a novel surface-averaged power density evaluator to demonstrate compliance with the IEEE C95.1a standard
  • a MIMO module to analyze diversity performance

For verification purposes, SEMCAD X results can be directly compared with the output of our experimental tools DASY6 and ICEy via the measurement file import function.

High-Precision Probe

The novel EUmmWV2 probe is designed for precise near-field measurements in the mm-wave range. The specifications are:

  • frequency range: 0.75 – 110 GHz
  • dynamic range: <50 – 3000 V/m (up to 10000 V/m with additional PRE-10 voltage divider)
  • linearity: <±0.2 dB
  • supports sensor model calibration (SMC)
  • ISO17025 accredited calibration (Q4 2017)

Power Density Compliance Testing

5G modules for cDASY6 and ICEy offer the following features:

  • novel algorithms for reconstruction of amplitude and phase of the electric (E-) and magnetic (H-) fields and the real part of the power density (S) from measurements of the E-field polarization ellipses on two planes
  • measurement distances as small as 2 mm from the surface of the device-under-test (DUT)
  • optimized measurement grid generation as a function of the test frequency and extent of the transmitter array
  • visualization of magnitude, vector field, and spatially averaged values
  • user-defined averaging areas
  • surface conformity assessments, e.g., around the DUT for conservative assessments or on the surface contour of the SAM phantom for combining SAR and power density distributions (available Q4 2017); ICEy surface conformity is based on automatic reconstruction of the DUT surface via contactless LASER triangulation
  • optimized workflow with minimal user interaction and automated report generation

Customized Research

SPEAG’s partner organization, the IT’IS Foundation, provides a broad spectrum of customized research services, from design to safety validation of 5G devices. IT'IS supports industry through the entire development process, from device design to regulatory approval, including measurements, simulations, reporting, and communication with regulatory bodies. IT’IS is also directly involved in the development of the compliance standards and therefore, can perform tests according to future standards already today. In addition, IT’IS has the knowledge and expertise to partner with industry to extend standardized procedures for testing devices not yet covered by standards, to validate modifications, and to communicate the changes to regulators.

For more detailed information, please refer to the Foundation's Custom R&D website or contact IT'IS directly by email.
