Release of SEMCAD X V14.8.0 Aletsch

The SEMCAD X Team is pleased to announce the release of SEMCAD X V14.8.0 Aletsch, a major upgrade offering a range of powerful new features. Particular highlights are the improved modeling functionality, novel HPC extensions, gridder improvements, dedicated Biomedical tools and extended PostPro capabilities.

A taste of some of the new features include:

GUI/MODELING

Advanced Modeling: plane clipping, editable ODB++ import
format, parametric sources, lumped elements and sensors.
Topological Morphing for conformal 3D modeling to arbitrary
surfaces.
Integration of Snagit for easy image and video screen capturing.
Dispersive Material Optimization tool to fit measured
parameters and Gabriel’s tissue database to the numerical
dispersive coefficient.

EM SIMULATION

Remote Huygens and Iterative Huygens source.
Improved gridder user experience: more intuitive and friendlier
to the user with predefined and customizable grid Templates.
Voxel Connectivity Check for verification of connectivity
between two PEC/Lossy Metal parts.
ARMA engine: significant reduction in simulation time.
Entirely new Remote Solver Client and Server applications.
Novel HPC acceleration library using (single, multiple) GPUs.

POSTPROCESSING

Updated 2D plots, vector viewer and new stream-line viewer
for enhanced result/data visualization.
User oriented Line Field Extraction tool.
Enhanced Multi-simulation: multi-port analysis with support for different input impedances, voxeling options and single port
analysis.
Dedicated Biomedical tools: export result function for post
processing with Musaik, Implant Safety Toolkit and updated
MRI toolkit with more functionalities.
New post-pro evaluator for absolute and RMS B1+ values.

PYTHON SCRIPTING

Integration of the Enthought Python package.
Extended API functions to access gridding and voxeling settings.

SEMCAD X: Enhanced Simulation of Waveguide Structures

SEMCAD X is a software framework with a high-end graphical user interface for electromagnetics and thermal simulations based on FDTD techniques that exploit both software and hardware acceleration strategies.

SEMCAD X incorporates a rich design and analysis environment by seamlessly combining modeling, simulation, optimization and post processing setups. To date, the FDTD techniques implemented in SEMCAD X have been successfully applied to a wide variety of both academic and industrial electromagnetic problems in a wide range of areas including antenna design, radiating/guiding microwave devices, electromagnetic compatibility, optics and bioelectromagnetics.

Despite the versatility achieved with this pool of FDTD solvers, there is a growing demand for a platform that tackles each part of the problem with the most suitable method and processes the specific outputs into the overall result. A large number of the structures encountered in microwave applications, given its resonant nature, constitute a challenging test field for this approach.

Thus, SPEAG has developed a new state-of-the-art solver based on the Mode-Matching Technique for the simulation of passive waveguide structures. This solver has been integrated into the existing SEMCAD X framework to provide the user with a common simulation environment that will abstract the method in which the solver has been implemented.

This paper presents an overview of the enhancements achieved in the simulation of mm-wave/microwave devices through a set of benchmarks, including dual-mode filters with rectangular and elliptical cavities and components for polarization discrimination.¹ Institute for Biomedical Engineering, University of Zürich and ETH Zürich, Gloriastrasse 35, 8092 Zurich, Switzerland.

SEMCAD X Light V14.6.2 Released

The SEMCAD Team is pleased to announce a new version of SEMCAD X Light V14.6.2

SEMCAD X Light V14.6.2 Aletsch is a limited version of SEMCAD X v14.6.2, specially tailored for educational purposes in order to facilitate the understanding of Electromagnetics for:

- Antennas
- Network & waveguide structures
- Microwave radiation & absorption
- EM compatibility & interference
- Low frequency EM problems

Some of the new features in SEMCAD X Light v14.6.2 are:

- Advanced Modeling
- New post processor averaging quantities for ICNIRP and C95 standards
- Unified Multiport simulation environment: network parameters, MIMO and antenna diversity, Multiband SAR
- Floating metals for ES and EQS low frequency solvers.
- Polyline based PEC/Metal Wire model.
- Extended Python API Browser and automatic API lookup.

SEMCAD X Light limitations - compared to the full version - are:

- Model limited to 10 solids maximum
- Grid size 1 MCells maximum
- Optimizer disabled
- SPICE circuit co-simulator disabled
- Thermal solver disabled
- Parts of the ELF solver disabled (ES and MS solvers still active)
- Acceleware GPU hardware acceleration disabled
- CAD import/export capabilities disabled
- Reduced number of Tools
- Limited Python scripting capabilities

Current users of SEMCAD X Light can now log into the SEMCAD eShop where you will be able to download the SEMCAD X Light installer including the relevant SEMCAD X Light Tutorial Projects.
